A Step Forward in Placemaking
The Crosswalk Art Project directly advances the DDA’s Transformation Strategy #1: Placemaking and Green Space by enhancing both the visual appeal and functionality of public spaces. These improvements encourage people to gather, linger, and explore downtown, supporting a more active and connected community environment.
As part of the broader Downtown Streetscape Initiative, the crosswalk art contributes to a more cohesive, walkable, and inviting downtown that prioritizes pedestrian experience alongside safety. These artistic crossings function as both traffic calming elements and visual landmarks, improving connectivity between key community assets such as schools, public safety facilities, and local businesses.
In alignment with our goals to create a uniform look while increasing visual excitement, the project transforms everyday infrastructure into an engaging and memorable public experience.
More Than Paint A Community Strategy
Beyond aesthetics, the Crosswalk Art Project reflects the principles of the Main Street America Approach by integrating design and community engagement. It demonstrates how small scale, high impact placemaking efforts can strengthen a sense of place, support local identity, and draw visitors into the downtown district.
Through collaboration with educators, students, and public partners, we're fostering broad based community involvement while reinforcing its commitment to a vibrant, people centered downtown.
Building a Broader Public Art Vision
The Crosswalk Art Project is part of a larger, ongoing effort to expand public art throughout Downtown Ortonville. Since the community’s first mural in 2020, we've continued exploring creative ways to incorporate art into everyday spaces, from pet paw prints along downtown sidewalks to planned holiday window painting in storefronts in 2025.
This evolving initiative includes a growing mural program, downtown art installations, sculptures, and interactive elements such as pet treat boxes created in collaboration with Brandon High School art, welding, and carpentry students. Together, these projects highlight the value of cross disciplinary student involvement while adding unique, community centered features throughout downtown.
In addition, we're working toward the development of public art standards and a comprehensive Downtown Public Art Blueprint. This strategy document will help guide future projects, ensuring a cohesive vision and long term impact for Ortonville’s public spaces.
Ultimately, the Crosswalk Art Project is more than painted pavement. It is a strategic investment in walkability and creativity in Downtown Ortonville.
