Filling the Funding Gap: How the Ortonville DDA Brings More to Downtown

Last Updated 3/25/2026

Creating a vibrant, welcoming, and economically strong downtown doesn’t happen by chance, it takes strategy, collaboration, and a deep commitment to finding the resources needed to turn ideas into reality.

At the Ortonville Downtown Development Authority (DDA), this responsibility is taken seriously. With a limited local tax base, the DDA understands that to further our develop of downtown depends on going beyond traditional funding sources. That’s why identifying, pursuing, and securing additional funding opportunities is a core part of its mission.

At the heart of this work is a proactive Fund Development Strategy designed to bring new investment into the community. By leveraging grants, partnerships, sponsorships, and community support, the DDA is able to extend its reach and make a greater impact downtown.

Leveraging Grants for Community Impact

One of the most important ways the DDA fills funding gaps is through securing competitive grants.

Recent successes include funding through the Michigan Municipal League Foundation Local Economies Grant Program, which supports initiatives that strengthen small businesses, attract visitors, and enhance community experiences. This funding helps bring events and placemaking efforts to life like the beloved Mistletoe Marketplace, a seasonal event that supports local vendors and draws people downtown.

In addition, the DDA has pursued and secured an Access to Transit Grant through Oakland County, supporting improvements that enhance accessibility and connectivity within downtown. Projects like these focus on real, everyday needs. Creating safer, more accessible pathways for residents, families, and visitors navigating the community.

Together, these grants help bridge the gap between vision and implementation. This makes projects possible that may not otherwise be achievable through local funding alone.

Building Partnerships That Multiply Impact

The DDA’s Partners Program is another key component of its funding strategy.

This program invites local businesses, organizations, and community supporters to invest directly in downtown initiatives. These partnerships are essential, not only for financial support, but for building a shared vision for Ortonville’s future.

Through partner support, the DDA is able to expand events, enhance programming, and create more opportunities for community engagement. In return, partners gain visibility while playing an active role in shaping the downtown experience.

This collaborative approach ensures that progress is not only funded, but fueled by the people who care most about the community.

Engaging the Community

Strong communities are built through participation, and the DDA recognizes that support comes in many forms.

From volunteering at events to contributing professional skills, supporting local businesses, or participating in community surveys, every effort helps move downtown forward.

Many local businesses and individuals have already stepped up. This includes, donating time, materials, and expertise to support beautification projects and public space improvements. These contributions are invaluable and demonstrate the strength of Ortonville’s community spirit.

A Strategic Approach to Revitalization

The DDA’s approach is simple but intentional: actively seek out funding opportunities and use those resources in ways that create lasting value.

By combining grants, partnerships, and community involvement, the DDA is able to:

  • Expand and enhance events and programming
  • Invest in infrastructure and accessibility improvements
  • Support local businesses and economic growth
  • Create inviting, engaging public spaces
  • Strengthen Ortonville’s identity and sense of place

This work requires ongoing effort, researching funding sources, applying for competitive grants, building relationships with partners, and ensuring every dollar is used effectively.

Looking Ahead

Filling the funding gap isn’t just about dollars, it’s about creating opportunity.

Through thoughtful planning, strong partnerships, and a commitment to pursuing every available resource, the Ortonville DDA continues to bring new energy, investment, and experiences to downtown.

Each grant secured, partnership formed, and contribution made reflects a larger goal: building a downtown that serves the community today while preparing for the future.

Together, we’re creating a downtown that reflects the spirit of Ortonville: connected, resilient, and full of possibility.
