Reimagining a Village Legacy: The Heritage Park Initiative
From Open Land to Shared Vision
Formed in 2021 by the Village Council, the Heritage Park Design Committee began with one clear goal: create a thoughtful master plan that would reflect the needs, values, and aspirations of the community. From the outset, the committee turned to the public for guidance. Residents shared their ideas through surveys and conversations, shaping a vision that blends history, accessibility, and beauty.
The result is a comprehensive, community-focused park plan that not only honors the past but embraces the future—a space where all generations and abilities can connect, relax, and celebrate.
Designing for All: Accessibility at the Forefront
Inclusivity is the cornerstone of the Heritage Park plan. Every design element has been carefully considered to serve a wide range of users, including older adults, disabled veterans, individuals with cognitive or neurodevelopmental disabilities, and the broader public.
Key features include:
- Ramp access to the Historic Township Hall for those with limited mobility
- Accessible family restrooms, the only public restrooms in the downtown
- A level, hard-surfaced viewing area for performances and events
- Multiple seating options designed for comfort and ease
- Green lawns, trees, and plantings for a calming, sensory-friendly experience
- Visual and audio accommodations, including non-glare lighting, signage for the visually impaired, and a wireless hearing-assistance sound system
- A simple, open-air stage platform, raised just 6–8 inches for easy access and equal participation
These elements ensure that Heritage Park will be a place where everyone—regardless of age or ability—can feel welcome and included.
A Pavilion with Purpose
Inspired by nearby examples and designed with both function and beauty in mind, the park’s pavilion stands as the central feature of the new design. Unlike a traditional gazebo that may go underutilized, this open-air structure is meant to host everything from intimate gatherings to large-scale events.
- Located at the south end of the park, the pavilion provides:
- Covered performance space
- On-site storage for park and seasonal equipment
- Public restrooms (a much-needed amenity for downtown)
- A visual and acoustic buffer between the park and neighboring residences
- A convenient backstage area, using the nearby parking lot for event setup and access
A Space for Every Season, Every Story
Heritage Park is more than a development project—it’s an opportunity to create a lasting gathering place that reflects the values of Ortonville: community, accessibility, nature, and history. The space is being designed for year-round use, flexible enough for both formal events and casual daily visits.
With a strong foundation rooted in community input and a design that prioritizes inclusiveness, the Heritage Park Initiative is poised to become a central hub for connection and celebration in the village for generations to come.
