We Are Main Street: Ortonville’s Transformational Strategies
What Are Transformational Strategies?
Transformational Strategies are the cornerstone of the Main Street Approach. Rather than taking on one-off projects, these strategies help communities like ours focus on long-term, measurable change. They’re designed to respond to local needs and opportunities—whether it’s preserving historic character, supporting small businesses, or activating public spaces—and they guide every decision we make, from events and economic development to design and outreach.
Each community selects its own unique strategies based on local input and data. These strategies are then carried out through the Four Points Framework: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization. This ensures that every initiative is balanced and sustainable.
Transformation Strategy #1: Placemaking & Green Space
In partnership with the Village of Ortonville, the DDA has launched a Placemaking Initiative to reimagine and reinvent our public and green spaces. Whether it’s upgrading existing parks, transforming underused corners, or introducing new features like seating areas, native plantings, or interactive art, this strategy is all about creating welcoming, functional spaces for the community to gather, relax, and connect.
Why it matters:
Great public spaces are the heartbeat of great downtowns. By investing in placemaking and green infrastructure, we’re improving quality of life, enhancing walkability, encouraging foot traffic to local businesses, and inviting residents and visitors alike to spend more time downtown.
Projects already underway or in planning include:
- Enhancements to Pocket Park areas
- Landscaping and streetscape updates
- Strategic use of art and murals to beautify shared spaces
- Long-term concepts for green space expansion and community gathering areas
Transformation Strategy #2: Business Activation & Development
A thriving downtown needs thriving businesses—and Ortonville’s local business community is full of potential. Through our Business Activation & Development Strategy, the DDA is working to support both new and existing businesses by collaborating with commercial property owners, helping activate vacancies, and shaping a strong, balanced business mix.
This strategy is focused on:
- Filling empty storefronts with the right-fit businesses
- Supporting entrepreneurs with resources, guidance, and visibility
- Promoting and celebrating existing businesses to help them grow
- Creating tools and incentives to attract new investment downtown
We’re not just focused on economic development—we’re focused on the right kind of growth. One that reflects Ortonville’s unique identity, builds a resilient economy, and strengthens our sense of place.
What's Next?
These transformational strategies are not quick fixes—they are a long-term commitment to making Ortonville a stronger, more vibrant community. Over the next few years, the DDA will continue to work with local leaders, businesses, and residents to bring these strategies to life, building on the character and creativity that make our town so special.
We are Main Street. And in Ortonville, we’re just getting started.
