Preserving Our Past, Planning for the Future: The Old Mill Preservation Project
In the heart of Downtown Ortonville stands a trio of treasured landmarks—the Old Mill Museum, the Blacksmith Shop, and the Mann Schoolhouse—each a testament to our village’s rich heritage and deep community roots. Now, thanks to a new planning initiative, these historic buildings are entering an exciting new chapter.
The Old Mill Preservation Project Master Plan is a collaborative effort between the Village of Ortonville, the Ortonville Community Historical Society, and Main Street Oakland County. Together, we are developing a thoughtful, long-term plan to preserve, enhance, and reimagine these cultural landmarks as more accessible and engaging spaces for all.
Why This Matters
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Mill complex is one of Ortonville’s most iconic and beloved destinations. But like all historic sites, it faces challenges in accessibility, maintenance, and modernization.
That’s why this master plan is about more than preservation—it’s about activation. We want these spaces to serve not only as historical references, but also as lively venues for education, gathering, and cultural exchange.
Project Highlights
The planning process begins with a comprehensive architectural assessment of the Old Mill buildings and surrounding site. From there, the master plan will focus on:
- Improving Accessibility: Installing ADA-compliant pathways, entrances, and restrooms to ensure everyone can enjoy the site comfortably.
- Preserving Historic Character: Any enhancements will maintain the original architectural details and heritage features that make these buildings so special.
- Expanding Community Use: Envisioning flexible indoor and outdoor spaces that can host educational programs, events, and seasonal activities.
- Creating a Long-Term Vision: Identifying phased improvements that allow for gradual updates based on available resources and community input.
A Cultural Hub for All
By making the Old Mill complex more usable and welcoming, we’re creating a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of our historic downtown—one that honors the past while serving the present.
This initiative aligns with our broader community goals of inclusiveness, lifelong learning, historic preservation, and downtown revitalization.
