Navigating the Future: Ortonville’s Wayfinding & Signage Plan
Why Wayfinding Matters
The goal of this initiative is simple yet powerful:
To create a clear and compelling branded signage system that increases both pedestrian and vehicular traffic to the many amenities Ortonville has to offer.
When done right, wayfinding doesn’t just get you from point A to B—it invites you to explore. Whether you’re a first-time visitor looking for downtown shops or a resident heading to a park or event, smart signage improves the experience and strengthens our local identity.
Existing Challenges We're Tackling
Before launching into new design ideas, we took a hard look at the signage issues currently facing our village:
- Poor direction to the downtown commercial district
- Lack of visibility or awareness of village amenities
- Ineffective and outdated sign placement
- Obstructed or cluttered gateway signage
- Sign overload in certain areas
- Hard-to-read fonts, poor color contrast, and size issues
- Limited flexibility to update or modify signs
- Lack of lighting on important directional signage
- Inconsistent branding, logos, and fonts that don’t align with the Village’s updated identity
These issues collectively create confusion, reduce the overall experience for visitors, and miss opportunities to celebrate the best of what Ortonville has to offer.
📍 Project Progress: Where We Are Now
We’re excited to share that multiple new signs have already been implemented throughout Downtown Ortonville, bringing a fresh, consistent look that improves both navigation and aesthetics. These early installations mark the beginning of a multi-year rollout.
The project is moving forward with a phased approach—several additional signs will be updated or added each yearas part of our commitment to improving the downtown experience over time. From business directional signage to amenity identifiers and gateway signs, each addition brings us closer to a fully unified and user-friendly system.
What’s Next?
This signage plan is more than a visual update—it’s a commitment to helping people connect with the heart of Ortonville. With improved wayfinding, visitors will spend more time exploring, businesses will gain more visibility, and locals will enjoy a stronger sense of place.
Stay tuned as we unveil the next stages of the plan—and soon, you'll see signs of progress all around town.
