Ortonville CreekFest 2012

Our Ninth Annual River Day Event*, June 2nd

Honored in 2011 as Oakland County’s Most Outstanding Event

*Every year towns across America celebrate their rivers on River Day. This year, Ortonville will join other communities on and around June 2nd, to celebrate our rivers, Kearsley Creek, Paint Creek, and the Clinton River.

CreekFest, a River Day event, offers the opportunity to acquaint Brandon township residents and those in neighboring townships with their water resources while enjoying a day of fun with their families and friends.

 What is River Day?

For many years now, American towns that have rivers have been celebrating River Day each year, on the first Saturday in June. River Day celebrations have taken place in both the Flint River Watershed and the Clinton River Watershed.

Since Brandon Township lies in both of these watersheds, and holds headwaters for both the Flint River (Kearsley Creek) and the Clinton River (Paint Creek), the need for public awareness and appreciation of these unique waterways is great. Ortonville’s historic Old Mill is on the banks of Kearsley Creek, a designated trout stream, which runs through the town of Ortonville. What better way to bring awareness to these wonderful water resources than to set aside a special day to celebrate them?

How CreekFest Educates Residents About Water Quality

Most property owners have no idea that their individual actions might be having an adverse affect on the water in our creeks, and, eventually, the water in our wells.

CreekFest, with its emphasis on Brandon’s water resources and family fun, is an unparalleled opportunity to reach local property owners with the message that their individual actions do make a difference. To this end, exhibitors are invited, free of charge, to set up informational displays and handouts, and to talk to residents about how water quality affects the quality of life for everyone in the Clinton River and Flint River Watersheds. Attendees are encouraged to visit the Exhibition area “under the big-top” behind the Old Mill, next to our Cool Jewel and designated trout stream, Kearsley Creek.

CreekFest: Fun for Everybody

Initiated in 2003 by the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy, and adopted in 2006 by the Ortonville Downtown Development Authority, CreekFest offers residents a unique day for families and friends, jam-packed with fun activities for all ages, including things like the Pancake Breakfast, the Animal Show, the Minnow Race, and the Yacht Race on Kearsley Creek. In 2011, Ortonville’s CreekFest was honored by Main Street Oakland County as the county’s Most Outstanding Event.

CreekFest Fact Sheet

Why is CreekFest important?

Because Ortonville’s Cool Jewel is Kearsley Creek, a designated trout stream and headwaters to the Flint River and Saginaw Bay.

How many towns can boast a designated trout stream?

Because Kearsley Creek runs right through our town. The Creek is a living link with Ortonville’s past, and part of our heritage, just as is the Old Mill, which stands on its banks.

BecauseIn addition to Kearsley Creek, Brandon Township has the headwaters of two other rivers: Paint Creek and the Clinton River.

Because Ortonville was honored in 2011 by Main Street Oakland County as its most outstanding event.  Our Creek is a rallying point  to revitalize our downtown.

Events like CreekFest bring the town together and highlight our local businesses.

Because our town has a focal point – The Old Mill and the Creek - unique features that tell us we are home.

Becausewe love our creeks.

The Ortonville DDA/Main Street program proudly presents Ortonville’s ninth annual CreekFest on June 2, 2012, in downtown Ortonville.  CreekFest is an opportunity to celebrate Kearsley Creek, our designated trout stream, and other waterways in the township.

Since 2003, CreekFest has been bringing attention to water quality issues in Brandon Township. The event has been a key element in meeting the Township’s Phase II EPA storm water management requirements.
